VoIP has liberated us from an antiquated industry’s high effect tags

=”article_text”>

With the recent Vonage IPO and flurry of television commercials for new VoIP or “voice-over-IP” services, many are wondering what this new technology is, what it means, and how it can help them.

VoIP is a very simple concept – instead of sending voice over copper wires and TDM’ing or “time division multiplexing” it (a discussion of which would turn non-technies green); VoIP sends voice out the same way data is sent out from your computer. When you send an email from your computer to another location, the data is “packetized”, or broken into diminutive bits that are then sent the most efficient way over the Internet. The packets do not reach in order, but are stored in buffer memory and reordered before they appear as a fresh email or file on the recipients computer. Voice data can also be “packetized”, but each packet must be reordered with no time delay in order to make sure it sounds right on the other end.

After ten years of research by many companies, VoIP technology has solved this delay plight among others to provide voice quality that rivals the quality of more traditional approaches, at a fraction of the cost.

What does this mean for the small business owner?

First of all, by switching from “traditional big telecom” to a VoIP provider – you can cut costs by as much as 100% for phone service. You can add an 800 line for as little as $9.99/month, have high end features such as conferencing, *69,*67, call waiting, etc without any extra charges, and you can rep your drawl mails from the Internet instead of pulling them from a sometimes unreliable answering machine.

As your computers now share bandwidth with your phones, it is possible to speed into a bandwidth crunch. This is directly analogous to having several people taking a shower in your house at once; water pressure may run a little gross. VoIP technologists have solved this problem in two ways; one, through the use of proprietary “compression” algorithms that actually predict voice from existing patterns, and two, through what is known as QoS or “quality of service” that prioritizes narrate traffic. If you have a VoIP service provider such as Vonage, you can configure voice priority through a menu on your Internet based console.

If you prefer to have the control of your telco system at your fingertips, you can install an IPPBX like the one from Linksys that was just announced for roughly $1k, and add extensions,.music on hold, and distinctive rings to your small 4-5 person office. Perceptions are everything, and most fresh customers will contemplate you are a much larger company than you are. These systems also allow your more control over the type of Quality of Service approach used and the type of compression algorithm used.

A great solution for small businesses that works in conjunction with a little IPPBX is the ipDialog SipTone(TM) III. This phone is a great choice for small businesses, as it has a 100 number call log, it can be set up in about five minutes, and looks nice on your desk. Three way conferencing, call waiting, calls-on-hold, and distinctive rings can all be controlled by this phone, giving you a “big company” phone system for your “small company”. The MSRP of this phone is $119 until June 1st.

The bottom line is that VoIP has removed our dependence on big telcom, with its big prices and lack of service. It promises to allow even bigger and better things as it moves into ubiquity.

If you are in the market for a helpful cell phone company make sure that you look around and a lot. There will be many surprises for you. You don’t have to settle for Verizon Wireless and its overbearing presences. There are plenty of other ones for you to choose from. Choose to inspect at Cellular One and even take a witness at another great company called Virgin Mobile, just to name a few of your choices. Make sure that you do. Verizon Wireless has a good system and great cell phone choices, but their service is over priced at all effect points and their customer service needs so much more to be affected. If you need to all for back in any way, customer service for Verizon Wireless is terrible and more precious time of your is spent on the phone to find help for one small problem.

Verizon Wireless is gargantuan company that took over lots of fledgling or failingly other companies to get where it is today. However, their numbers will decrease as is expected, they have accumulated all that they can, their market share will decrease with time, as is always the case. When you are looking for something economical, don’t go to them. Though they are profitable for business accounts, someone that has need for personal use of a cell phone they will rake you over the coals for a mere small chronicle with them. For what, you barely find anything for a service that will cost you a lot so look elsewhere.

With Virgin Mobile you are remarkable better off. You have fantastic customer service at all hours of the day and night directly to the source that you need and a minimal of twenty dollars every three months for the cell phone’s use. Talk about economical, talk about a exiguous fee for cell phone service, so remember when you are out there looking at phones and one catches your eyes, look at their monthly charges, especially that of Verizon Wireless, who are ridiculously overpriced. For the money you get nothing but headaches, but you might get a pretty phone that you have to pay extraordinarily high prices for. You know, you can find the same phones with other companies that will charge you a portion of the cost for a lot lower price.

So don’t wait, look into Virgin Mobile and Cellular One and all the other cell phone companies, see all the options they have to offer you before you invest or even settle for a dreadful account with Verizon Wireless. There hasn’t been a better time to find the cell phone company to work for your needs than right now. Glean what you deserve, look other than Verizon Wireless and switch to the companies that offer the prices that you can afford. Then, get the service that you deserve every day and any day. They are out there and they have the price, the equipment and the service that you are looking for.

The phone system is a essential fraction of equipment when operating a small business. Your phone system needs to meet the needs of your particular business, and needs to be customizable and expandable if you anticipate changes or growth in your business.

When you select a phone system, you need to evaluate the needs of your business and compare them to the features that are available.

Phone System Size:
The first thing to judge when you choose a phone system is size. When you look at phone systems, it is important to factor in the modern and anticipated size of your business. If your business has more than 40 employees, or is growing quickly, you may need a large phone installation such as a PBX phone system. PBX systems can be programmed and customized to accommodate nearly any feature you might want. Smaller businesses may find that a PBX system is the best option for their needs, and is calm cost effective, or they may opt for one of the readily available Key or KSU-less phone systems intended for smaller installations.

First, figure out how many extensions your business will need. You will probably need an extension for each employee or work area; in addition, you will need a phone line for each fax machine or other equipment that uses a phone connection. The next factor in phone system size is the number of outside phone lines. The outside phone lines control the number of calls that can take dwelling simultaneously, either coming into or out of your business. If you demand your business to grow, make sure your system can be expanded to the maximum number of lines and extensions you expect your business to need.

Caller ID/ Call Waiting ID:
If it is important to you to know who is calling, you will need a phone system that offers caller ID. If you use plan to use call waiting to alert you to another call that is coming in, you may want caller ID on your call waiting as well. Consider the way the phone displays the caller numbers and how many can be stored in memory for a call history. Remember that use of these services may incur additional charges from the phone company.

Voicemail:
Do you need a phone system that offers integrated voicemail for each extension? Voicemail allows each extension to record outgoing messages for callers and to record messages when the recipients are away from the phone.

Conference calling:
Do you need to host phone meetings by conferencing in multiple people within or out of your office? Look for the number of lines that you may conference into one call.

Speakerphone:
Is it important for you to hold calls hands-free? Ogle for a speakerphone function on your phone system. You will probably want one with adjustable volume control.

Memory and Speed Dial:
Most business phone systems allow you to store frequently called phone numbers in the system. Evaluate how many numbers you will need to store to make distinct the phone system will accommodate all of them. Stored numbers may be accessed by programmable speed dial codes on some systems or using the conceal menu on other phone systems. Also, look for a phone system with battery backup so that your phone systems will not lose their stored memory in the event of a power outage.

So you are ready to start podcasting. You want the world to hear you out. You have something you have to say.

AWESOME!

That is the blessing of a Podcast. With podcasting you can talk about anything under the sun. There is however some protocol to hosting a Podcast. The first thing you need to do is understand what a Podcast is and is not.

Podcasting is not a radio broadcast. You also do not have to have an iPod to have a Podcast prove. Here is what Wikipedia says Podcasting is:

“Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio program or music videos, over the internet for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. Podcasts are distributed using either the RSS or Atom syndication formats.”

A podcast usually features one type of show, with episodes either sporadically or at specified intervals, such as daily or monthly. Podcast can be heard on a computer or a mobile audio device.

The host of a podcast is called the “Podcaster”. That is you.

As the Podcaster you can create a show that is off the hook (as the kids say) or you can have one that is mediocre at best. The key lies in your delivery.

That is what we will cover here in this book.

At the slay of this book you will find a glossary to serve you in opinion a few of the terms mentioned in this e-book.

Get a Focus

There is one thing you must do before you start podcasting. You have to create a focus. Find a theme for your show. Resolve what you want your indicate to be about.

Will you interview people? If so, what type of people will you interview? Perhaps moms in hobby focused businesses. Or may you want to interview couples with long standing marriages. There are so many topics you can interview on and so many angles for interviews.

A show can also be about your business. If you are an expert in business marketing, you can focus your show around providing marketing tips for your listeners. You can even bring in other experts in the field. If you are a life coach you can focus on items pertinent to your niche market. Maybe you are a teacher. Why not effect a show about the subject you teach? You can give tutoring tips to students and maybe even have them call in to your show and do a live session.

There are people out there looking for experts in your field. All you need to do is develop that definite focus to reel them in.

Podcasting is great because it can do what can’t be done in broadcasting. With a podcast you can gear your exhibit for reaching a small focused and underserved topic of interest. By choosing a specific dwelling of interest to focus on, you can create a podcast that creates is an awesome source of information and enjoyment for your niche crowd.

If you need some ideas go to the various podcast directories and see what others are doing with their podcasts. Just be certain that whatever you choose is something you are angry about and will enjoy speaking on.

Once you have your show conception, you then need to decide how often you will podcast so that you can make a calendar for your shows. Will you do your shows daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? You must have an idea so you can bag the information needed for a successful show. Organization if KEY.

You need to be sure that once your focus is set, you have a format that works for you. Will you have more than one segment? If so, you need to write the order of your show on paper so that you don’t forget as you record your show.

Here is an example from one of my shows:

Intro music

Welcome

Announcements

Lady Liaison (Life Coach)

Sponsor Ad

Interview with Sister of the Month

Lady Liaison (Devotion)

Sponsor ad

Final Words

Outro Music

We will talk about how to bag your guests in another part of this book.

Now you have your focus and that is great. I suggest that you listen to other podcast on topics similar to get an idea of how you can present your topic.

Now onto Your Equipment!

Your Equipment

As you prepare for the recording of your Podcast, you want to do sure to have the right equipment. Now there is all sort of equipment, some of it is cheap and some of it is higher kill quality. Whatever you choose to use, produce sure it makes your podcast sound like you want it to and that it will not lose your audience.

To podcast all one really needs is a computer, a mic, and editing software like Wave Pad (you can find free editing software). There are many Podcasters who also do their podcast with a good old telephone, using services such as Audio Acrobat.

Now you cannot utilize any phone and think it will sound ok. That will not work. You need a good landline phone. If you choose to use a cordless phone, stay as close to the defective as possible and get a good headset for proper voice projection.

Please do not employ a cell phone because they get for some ravishing bad recordings. Also make sure your guests do not exercise a cell phone as it may ruin the interview if a call is dropped or the interviewee fades in and out due to the area or place they are in. Let your guest know to speak as clearly as possible in an audible, but not too loud voice.

Your phone volume should be state reasonably so that you are not too loud or too low. Test your connections before you recount. Test your sound and your guest sound by doing a 1-2-3 test that should take no more that a cramped. Simply call your recording and test the sound. Play it back to be sure that it sounds good before you begin your recording.

Please test, because you do not want to select that it all sounds ok. There are many Podcasters out there with expansive content, but because of abominable sound quality they lose their audience fast.

Bottom line; use a good phone with good audible capabilities.

If you are going to be using music with your podcast, make sure you have a good set of speakers so that the music does not sound far away. If you have a speaker phone, that may work. Just be sure to test, before your record.

A quick note about music! Make distinct that any music you use is Royalty Free or Podsafe. You cannot go out, consume a CD and then use a song from it on your show. That is illegal and can cause some serious legal ramifications. You can also exercise Creative Commons to seek music for your podcast as well.

Now you have your equipment in hand; it’s time for the environment. Pay attention! This one is important.

Your Environment

It is time to prepare your environment. You have your first guest or perhaps you are doing it with no guest. Whatever your podcast focus, you need to have the proper environment.

When you podcast the atmosphere must be quiet. The background has to be free of television, outside noises, children, dogs, etc. There is nothing worse on a podcast than the sound of screaming children or barking dogs, unless they are a part of your podcast. If you are using a cordless phone try to end as close to the sinister as possible to avoid static and other typical interruptions.

Try to record your demonstrate in an area that is as quiet as possible and if you can, utilize that same room all the time. This will make for consistency in the sound and quality of your podcast.

Your environment should have very little or no echo and no reverberation. You don’t want your recording to sound like you are in a shower

As you are recording, do not touch your phone or adjust your headset, unless it is absolutely necessary. Believe it or not, you can produce a lot of noise by simply touching a phone.

If you are not going to have a guest and will not be using your three way line, please turn off your two-way calling, so that you do not score a loud click. If you do not know the code to turn off your call waiting, call you phone company and they will give it to you.

No you have your equipment and you are in the right environment, time to figure out how to accumulate those guests to come knocking for an interview.

Your Guests

Getting guests on your show is not that hard. Even is you have a “one woman” show, it is respectable to have a guest or two every now and then. So, how do you get the guests?

In order to get good guests, you first need to have your focus, which we discussed earlier I the book. When you have your focus getting the guest is a cinch. You unprejudiced have to know the protocol.

First you want to decide what type of guest you want. Do you want women only or will you include men as well. Maybe your display centers on children. If your focus is women writers you will want to accept women who are authors. If your show is a health related one, you need to find guests who are in the health and wellness fields.

Once you know what type of guests you want, you have to go on a hunt to find them.

First look at your list of family and friends. Do any of them fit the bill for your show? Next go to your networking groups and let them know the type of guests you are seeking. You can also be guest to get a guest. In other words seek those podcast looking for guests and offer to do their show in exchange for them being on yours. There is nothing wrong with a little bartering.

You can also send letters to potential guest inviting them to be a part of your podcast. Ask others to suggest people as possible guests.

Whatever way you choose to get your guest, be professional in your approach.

People esteem to talk about themselves and what they do. You will get responses.

Are you ready to describe? Read on.

The Recording

It is now time to record your show. You have prepared, tested, contacted your guest, if you have any, and are ready to record.

You were given a call in number when you joined this network. Before you call obtain sure that you are in the spot where you will be recording. Don’t walk from one room to the next while you are recording. It will create unnecessary noise.

If you have announcements, create them before you call any guests you may have. If you do this you will need to do two call ins. One for recording your announcements and one for recording with your guests.

If you have a guest let them know that it will take you about 30-45 seconds to call into your recording service and then excuse yourself. Let them know to be as collected as possible so that when you click back over, there will not be any surprising sounds. After calling in wait for the prompt from the voice recording before you click back over.

Now you are recording.

Always be sure to introduce yourself, your podcast, and the topic of your show for that day. If you have guests introduce them as well. Be as brief as possible in your introductions without missing pertinent information.

During the podcast try your best to be a determined as possible. If you form a mistake, by all means apologize, after all we are all human and we do mess up sometimes. If you are interviewing try asking launch ended questions, so that you do not have a boring interview. Engage your guests and your audience. Construct your audience feel as if they are right there with you.

Be yourself! Please don’t put on another persona. Be the incredible you that you are. Let your personality shine through.

Try to maintain your podcast to about 20-30 minutes, especially if it us honest you. A lengthy show can become slow, boring, and bear to edit.

At the slay of your recording be a genuine host. Please and Thank You do go a long way. Thank your guest and your audience for being a part of your show for the day.

End your podcast with a snappy price line. I often say “recede with God and watch you life be Blessed” or something relevant to the show.

Once you are done recording, be sure to disconnect in the proper manner to avoid yet another annoying sound. Thank your guest again and get ready for your podcast to be broadcast.

Your recording will be edited for clarity once you are done and then your podcast will be ready to be heard by your audience.

Depending on which package you purchased, you will be given an html code to use for uploading to your website or blog.

The main thing to remember is that this podcast represents you and all you stand for. Make it count and it will last!

One of the biggest concerns for anyone who decides to live abroad is how to stay connected with loved ones, friends, and colleagues back home. Certainly, the fear of being isolated and not in touch is something that prevents some from deciding to disappear to another country.

Expensive long distance phone costs and poor quality telecommunications service were once dependable issues that hampered life overseas. However, times have changed. Current technologies now enable low cost and even free phone calls to and from anywhere in the world. And, the quality and consistency of the connections are crystal clear, too.

Through the use of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology, anyone, anywhere can create a call by simply using a PC and an internet connection. The technology is readily available, convenient, and dramatically less expensive than traditional phone service. Because of this, it’s the ideal communication solution for individuals who have chosen an international lifestyle but still want to stay in touch with contacts back home.

VoIP works very similar to a telephone line, but instead of the phone being plugged into the wall, calls are made through an internet connection. With the use of software from a VoIP provider, it’s as easy as plugging in an inexpensive headset or USB phone and dialing the number that you want to call. If a computer has built in speakers and a microphone, no additional equipment is needed at all.

Skype is the most widely-known provider of VoIP technology. First introduced in 2004, the company has grown in popularity primarily because of their free PC to PC calls. By downloading their software, a user of Skype can call other Skype users anywhere in the world for free.

Skype’s service becomes somewhat more complicated when trying to call someone other than a Skype user. To address this issue, they also offer a “Pay As You Go” plan and a variety of subscriptions that are billed monthly or annually. Prices vary depending on where users call, and there are additional fees to be aware of. Thus, it’s a righteous idea to read the small print before signing up and placing your first call.

As fragment of Skype’s subscription packages, they also include voicemail, call forwarding, text messaging, and an online number to enable others to call you from a regular phone to advance you on Skype.

For those who make frequent calls outside of their local area, there are a variety of other VoIP providers that deliver even less expensive options than Skype. One such company, MediaRing Talk has been on the cutting-edge of VoIP technology for over a decade. They are a well-known provider with an easy-to-use service for calling landlines and mobile phones that is particularly geared to expatriates and others living or traveling abroad.

Currently, MediaRing Talk offers free PC to PC calls globally fair like Skype, but they also provide free PC to phone calls to eight countries including the UK, Canada, Australia, and China. Rates to other global destinations are amongst the lowest in the industry. The company has also recently announced that they will be launching a unique program that will enable members to savor unlimited free call benefits to 50 countries for $12.99 per month. The current program will also allow members to take advantage of unlimited talk time on every call made.

“We completely understand the need for reliable, inexpensive communications when living overseas,” says Robert Pearlstein, vice president of business development and marketing for MediaRing Talk. “Our unique business model is particularly well-suited for anyone who wants the convenience and flexibility to call any type of phone without having to worry about racking up long distance charges.”

Another VoIP provider that is a celebrated of many expatriates and international travelers is Net2Phone. Like with Skype and MediaRing Talk, users must download software to take advantage of Net2Phone’s service. They offer low per minute rates on PC to phone calls and a variety of broadband phone service plans.

However, they are most recognized for their international prepaid calling cards. The cards are ideal for individuals who don’t have access to a PC or the Internet but tranquil want to take advantage of the lower calling rates that VoIP technology enables. By prepaying for time on the card, cardholders can enjoy rates as low as 5 cents per minute for international calls.

Cell phones are also definitely an alternative to relying on VoIP or local phone service for long distance. However, roaming charges can gain extremely expensive and reception might not always be adequate in certain locations. A far less costly and more reliable option is to occupy a prepaid cell phone once overseas for receiving calls and using VoIP on your PC for calling out.

As technology continues to improve, there will undoubtedly be even more advances that will facilitate cost-effective, widely available global communications. In the meantime, anyone who has decided to reside offshore can certainly chop their costs for long distance by taking advantage of VoIP technology.

In the last twenty years the amount of technology we have had available to us has grown exponentially. Then we may have had an Atari to player Asteroid and if we were lucky one of those current fangled VHS players. Now we have personal computers, laptops, mp3 players, personal digital assistants, cell phones, home theater systems, web appliances, tablet computers, flat screen televisions, all sorts of video game consoles, if someone has thought of it, we probably have it. All of these great epitomes of modern technologies don’t come for free though, they cost money. By following these tips, you can probably save over $1,000 annually.

The first thing you will probably want to look at is your telephone services. If you still have a landline, you are probably better served by just dropping it all together. Often times people pay around $40 per month for these services. We now all have cell phones and can make use of VOIP phone calls which sound better and better each month for just pennies a day. You should also reevaluate your cell phone plan. Often times people pay for features and minutes they never use. If you are not coming close to your limit, drop your plan down to something great less expensive. Doing these things alone could probably save you over $500 a year!

Quit paying the post office to send your bills off. Use an electronic bill paying service to take care of them. Most of the time your bank will offer them for free, and now you don’t have to worry about forgetting one of your bills. If you write out 6 bills a month, that’s almost $40 in stamps, envelopes and checks you’ll save each year!

Computers and other electronic devices can suck up a lot of power, even if they are turned off! Most of the time you actually have to unplug them before they quit using any energy! If you turn your computer off at night, you’ll probably build about $100 per year! Doing this all with all of your appliances could easily cut your electricity bill in half!

It may be tempting to go out and buy Apple’s new iPhone, or whatever the latest and greatest gadget is, but you will always pay a huge premium for the latest and greatest. Your current technology probably serves you just fine. Wait a year or so after a product comes out and you’ll easily be able to save about 30% on the note you’ll pay for a gadget.

When buying digital music, don’t regain suckered in to the 99 cents a song pricing scheme. You can now listen to all of the music to your hearts desire for just about ten bucks a month through many of the subscription based music services such as Napster.

Hopefully you will be able to save a lot of money on the technology we all know and love. I know it may be the easy thing to do to go out and capture that iPod, leave your computer on, and leave your phone lines alone, but you could potentially save quite a bit of money!
